About Us

Tucson Dodgeball Inc. was created to promote all things dodgeball. Currently, we sponsor play on Wednesday night at the Lohse Family YMCA, downtown. TDI encourages good sportsmanship and physical activity/health to youth groups, and sponsors team play and practice for those who wish to attend local tournaments, as well as the national tournament in Las Vegas.

Tucson Dodgeball was first started in 2003 by a group of friends who had nothing better to do on a hot summer night than play dodgeball. The group started playing in the ILC of the University of Arizona, but they were forced out of that location because they were not affiliated with the university. They found a new place to play at the tennis courts of Pima Community College west, and were similarly removed from that location.

In order to survive, Tucson Dodgeball formed a corporation (now pending for non-profit status) and moved to Christ Presbyterian Church. During its run, Saturday Night Dodgeball drew crowds of up to 80 people a night, had bands play, and hosted special events, such as the Halloween ball. Play has since moved to the YMCA on Wednesday nights.

FAQs
Organizational Info

Are you guys a real corporation? Yes. Our Articles of Incorporation were signed on August 25th, 2005. The Arizona Corporate Commission approved Tucson Dodgeball Incorporated on September 3rd, 2005.

Why did you guys decide to incorporate? We were tired of being kicked around by local authorities and felt that the best way to solicit donations and support from members of the community is by means of offering tax deductions. We also seek to protect ourselves from liability and insurance issues since dodgeball has grown in popularity.

What is your mission statement? Our mission is to build, improve and maintain communities by advocating the integral values of teamwork, athleticism and interaction through the sport of Dodgeball and various other social activities.

How long have you been playing Dodgeball? The founding members of TDI have been involved in Dodgeball since mid summer of 2003.

What is the skill level of your players? Our players range from beginner to National Dodgeball League certified professional.

Do you have any leagues? We are in the process of testing out leagues at the YMCA on Monday nights. Contact Steve for more info.

What is Team Evil? Team Evil is a band of the most deadly dodgeball players Tucson has to offer. The name is based on a reference to the film Shaolin Soccer. Team Evil has played in Vegas the past two years.

Why Dodgeball? Founded by bored college students, Dodgeball has become successful because it is cheap, easy to play and is a sport where everyone has an equal role in the team’s success.

Wednesday Night Dodgeball Info

What are the rules for Wednesday night? The rules can be found on our Rules Page.

Where do you guys play? We currently play at the Lohse Downtown YMCA located at 60 W. Alameda St.

When do you guys meet? Every Wednesday from 8:00 to 10:00.

How much does it cost? The cost for admission is $2.00. All proceeds to go back into our program (rent, etc.).

What is the age range of your members? We have enjoyed members from the age of 9 to past 30. The average age of players is around 18. Though there isn’t an age limit yet, please carefully read and sign the YMCA Dodgeball Parental Disclaimer if you choose to allow your child to participate.

What kind of balls do you use? In the past, we used pretty much whatever people brought in on Saturday nights (seen below for nostalgia). Currently, we usually use standard ball sizes and shapes: four of the standard 8" size balls featured on Dodgeball the movie, and sometimes two 4" stingers.

Balls used in the past:

The "Arsenal." The standard 8" balls are on the left, stingers are on the right.
The Hornet. Like standard 8" balls, but lighter. It can be thrown harder and therefore "stings" like a hornet. The hornet popped, and it is dearly missed.
Chaos ball. It might look like this spiky ball isn't going to hit you, but then, BAM! it curves right into you. It's very hard to control, and adds an element of chaos to the game.
The Ball of Shame. This overinflated pool volleyball is hard to throw and extremely easy to catch. People hit by it are "shamed" because if you get out by this ball, you look like a fool. The ball in this picture has been retired, but its "son" has since replaced it.
The Princess Ball. It's small, but it can pack a punch if thrown hard.
Shields. Overinflated balls that if thrown, are likely to be caught. They're used for blocking other balls.
Stingers. Pay attention. Otherwise, you're likely to be hit by one of these little fellas!

Do you have tournaments? Tournaments occur on a regular basis on a statewide and nationwide basis. Visit tucsondodgeball.com and USDL.com for updates.
